Behind the Shoe…
January 3, 2007
"In a search for the impossible, you can sometimes find the most unexpected miracles."
- The Cure by Peter Horton in 1993 -
I saw this movie in 1995 in RPN 9.
After 11 long years of waiting and finding a copy of it, I got to watch it again at my friend's house last December 26, 2006. I tried to watch it at home but it wasn't successful. Glad that it worked at my friend's DVD player. There I saw the two boys again who made me cry in '95, Brad Renfo and Joseph Mazzello. It reminded me of one beautiful unexpected friendship that happened between them.
Some scenes I almost forgot but some are so vivid that no matter how many years have passed by.
I am always amazed on how Miracles of Friendship between friends happen..
When I played it.. I even saw a synonymous name, "Sherin" on the list of the production staff… Hehehe
There I was able to find answers to my question… what was the story behind the shoe?
Erik: Were you having a nightmare or something?
Dex: No.
Erik: What's the matter?
Dex: It happens sometimes when I wake up and it's dark.
Astronomers believe that the universe is 18 billion light years across.
Erik: So?
Dex: Suppose you kept going another million light years. What if there's nothing out there?
Suppose you kept going another trillion years further. So far out you see nothing. The light from the universe would be fainter than the faintest star - infinitely cold, infinitely black. Sometimes if I wake up and it's dark… I get really scared. Like I'm out there and I'm never coming back.Erik gets a pair of his rubber shoes/
Erik: Here. Hold onto this while you sleep. And if you wake up and you're scared, you'll say, "Wait a minute, I'm holding Erik's shoe. Why the hell would I be holding some smelly basketball shoe a trillion light years from the universe? I must be here on earth, safe in my sleeping bag, and Erik must be close by."
Dex: I guess it's worth a try. (Dex gets the shoe and keep it while sleeping).
Erik: Do you want the lantern on? (Erik never got any response from Dex because he ell asleep.)
The Cure isn't the many attempts to find the Cure to AIDS…
Dex might have died despite the many efforts of Erik… but it's the FRIENDSHIP that made him cured and happy…
Behind the shoe is one great piece of trust, willingness and friendship.
It's enough to sit and sleep comfortably as long as you're with a friend…
