The Shadow of Keys
January 17, 2007I began writing lyrics and melodies when I was still in highschool as part of PE's requirement to make a cheer… i made one in the tune of "WE WILL ROCK YOU!"…
Then another requirement to make a song for a songwriting contest… as far as I can remember, i wrote one for "KALIKASAN"… a song, though favored by the majority, never won any title at all. So I stopped making songs… I just ignored the possibility that I could write songs..
Then another requirement… a song i forgot the title and I forgot the concept. A song I just created in just an hour… That's the time I felt… I am more comfortable writing nationalistic songs in Filipino. Something that speak of change… of idealism… of a dream for everybody… May be due to the inspiration of APO Hiking Society at the time of People Power, Florante's Handog, George Canseco, Willy Cruz, Rey Valera, Gary Granada, Joey Ayala…
Then on fourth year, we were tasked to write new songs for the Likha-Awit which will be used for our graduation. It has been a tradition… I wrote "Moog ng Tagumpay".. a nationalistic song that speaks of individuality… it has become the song of our batch, played in inter and intra-school presentations… and on as our graduation theme…
I decided to make an arrangement of Ama Namin into something "mejo-rock"… and it has become a great hit! Everyone's dancing while singing it… Year after the other, I visit every graduation rites to play the songs I made… some were even sung in other schools courtesy of my teachers… some were even sung in choir courtesy of my highschool classmates…
Up to now I still receive some messages from friends that they still know the song…. even sung to me upfront at one occasion. It really made me happy.
It's letting your thoughts be heard… appreciation comes next as a bonus…
That's the glory of being a songwriter…
The glory I wish I could attain…
